It seems apparent that many Christians will have to "come out of the closet" and possibly, for the first time in their lives, become pro-active in the fight that is hand. Every village, town and hamlet in this country has churches that consider themselves Christian. Maybe it's time to redefine the word Christian so that it equates with Biblical principals.

Hey dave new to the site!
I like the questions! But can you define brand for me? You are marketer and yes in that respect with the terms and ways of marketing I'm at a loss! As a theologian I have trouble with some of the terms being used in the context of the church... But I think that in some cases it might merely be semantics of the same thing! Not sure

Dave, I'm thinking this might have been a response to our podcast. The least you could have done was said was "I listened to this horrible podcast today..." and linked to us. Any press is good press, right?

I posted a reply to your comment on the Church Marketing Sucks website, and now that I've made the trek over to your blog I think I see where the disconnect was. I was curious about your statement in the comment that "[X] is not marketing." Now that I've read the last paragraph of this post, I think I understand your definition. In the example I gave I was just taking about marketing a specific event, not a cohesive marketing strategy for the whole church. So we were sort of talking across each other.

Also, some links are broken on your "Examples from the Book" section. Might want to check that out.

Blessings.

It amazes me the number of ministries that do not do any financial forcasting beyond the quarter, no less the month. It is time for churches and ministries to set an annual plan, including an annual budget. Sure you may have to adjust as you go but put the plan into action. There are too many churches whining about money and plans yet when asked if they have an annual plan, they say "no, we budget month to month." How can your ministry possibly grow and be blessed if you are not being responsible to plan for the future? You and your staff may not like the process of budgeting and planning, but it is vital to a growing ministry. As the Pepsi Max commercial boasts - WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Too many times we've built a cult of personality and shown Christians and non-Christians the ugly side of what happens when you do this. it is the easy way out that leads to corruption and pain for all, and it is exactly why we should take the time and the money to build the brand around the church mission.

Anthony,

I love your thought process, great comment. There are thousands of other ministries who don't think about these areas of the ministry or understand that they need to think about it in this realm. This is why there are different people in the body of Christ.

Advertising is just one component of your marketing mix. Marketing is much broader and examines every "touch point" with your audience; your product, people, place (distribution), promotion and price. For churches this affects a diverse range of things like:
1. Who you hire?
2. What you preach?
3. Where you meet?
4. When you meet?
5. What do new or prospective members experience?
6. What keeps people in your church?

I like to thing of "Evangelism" as our "product" - and wrapped up in that is disclipleship, personal growth, relationships etc.
But other people may have differing opinions on this?
